It's the eve of the Las Vegas wedding of his close friend Judy Claymore and Roland Hayes juggles a host of conflicting emotions while pacing in his hotel room. Their joyful reunion is interrupted by a gruff delivery man bearing Roland's order of Chinese food and a truckload of wry observations on women, relationships, and why a Sinatra ballad is ideal for disrupting a wedding ceremony. Over the course of the weekend Roland is visited -- "confronted" is probably a better word -- by all the women lurking in his past in a series of surreal comic vignettes. He grapples with his reluctance to let them go and his fears about the future. In the end he is able to let go of worn-out old dreams and make room for new ones -- and for new love.

The protagonist, Haruna Iba, is a university student in Kitakyushu. One evening, she visits the general hospital where her brother works. Her brother, Masato, a surgeon, had just finished operating on an emergency patient when he said something strange to her: "The locket pendant the patient had contains a photo of me as a child. Why is that?" Soon after, they learn an unexpected truth from their parents—the woman who had been brought in, Yumiko Sakurai, is Masato's biological mother. To save Jacques and a group of children from the munitions factory, however, Jefferson sends them across the American lines through the tunnel, but they lose their way, and he is forced to disable the mine. Jefferson is court-martialed, but King Albert of Belgium, who has befriended little Jacques, intercedes on his behalf. Learning that Karl has been killed, Jefferson pursues his budding romance with Yvonne.
